Traffic to your proxy website from certain countries can overload the hosting server. Other times, certain countries simply do not generate enough revenue or ad clicks. Others have a particularly high rate of fraud. There may even be other reasons, depending on the situation. Blocking countries from accessing a proxy site is an issue that often comes up in the business. The most common seem to be China and Iran followed by Afghanistan. There are some who prefer not to add these restrictions, while others feel it is necessary.
There are two ways to achieve this. One is to install GeoIP on your server, or ask your host to install it for you if they do not already have it. The other way is to obtain a large list from Block a Country.
The GeoIP way on a Linux server. Place this code on your .htaccess file:
RewriteEngine on
SetEnvIf GEOIP_COUNTRY_CODE CN BlockCountry
SetEnvIf GEOIP_COUNTRY_CODE IR BlockCountry
Deny from env=BlockCountry
This would block China and Iran. Notice the use of 2 character ISO 3166 codes. To add more entries, just create a new line. For example, if Taiwan (TW) were to be added, the end result would look like this:
RewriteEngine on
SetEnvIf GEOIP_COUNTRY_CODE CN BlockCountry
SetEnvIf GEOIP_COUNTRY_CODE IR BlockCountry
SetEnvIf GEOIP_COUNTRY_CODE TW BlockCountry
Deny from env=BlockCountry
If GeoIP is not an option:
Use Block a Country to generate a list of IPs to block. Copy and paste the list to your .htaccess file.

I recently went through all of my proxy sites and analyzed the CTR so I could find out which sites are under performing and improve them. If you’re not familiar, CTR stands for ‘Click Through Rate’ and is a ratio of how many times an ad is displayed to how many times it is actually clicked. Most proxy webmasters find their numbers are typically low, even less than 1% in many cases. I have manged to get anywhere from 2% to 6% depending on the month or the day, which is nearly unheard of in this business.
Here are my tips for you:
I have found these themes perform the best from my experience:
SEO Optimized (Glype) – 2.08% CTR for October 2010.
Orangeproxy (PHPRoxy) 2.67% CTR for October 2010.
Another trick I use is to watch my sites to see if irrelevant advertisements show up. I check the URL and then block it by logging into AdSense and going to ‘AdSense Setup’ –> ‘Competitive Ad Filter’. Read the instructions, then enter one address per line into the form and save the changes. One particularly good idea is to remove services that sell blocking and filtering software since this is the opposite of what proxy users are looking for. Here are some that I recommend adding to the list due to their lack of relevance:
bloxx.combtdiamondip.ccdelocitie.commy-windows.comnetworksecuritydegree.comsophossecurity.comveintreatmentcenter.comwebwatchernow.comwww.fwanalyzer.comwww.gfi.com/web-blockingyourticker.comYou can always check your own sites for unrelated ones and add them to the blocklist. Do not click your own ads to determine the URL as this is against the terms of service. Just look to see if it’s displayed next to the ad.
Proxy lists are essentially just a list of proxies. They can contain different types of proxies such as Web-based, HTTP, SSL, Transparent, SOCKS4 and SOCKS5. Some even display multiple types in one place.
Users
End-users often wish to find fresh proxies on a regular basis to avoid leaving a trail of data and cookies. Other people find that the ones they use go down or no longer work with their favorite sites. Some people who live in countries which engage in internet censorship often find their favorite proxy sites become easily banned by their government. In those cases is it necessary to continuously find new ones.
Proxy Webmasters
Proxy lists serve two main purposes for webmasters. One reason is for owners of proxy list websites to display advertising so they can gain revenue. The other purpose is for owners of web-based proxies to purchase or trade advertising on these lists to increase traffic to their sites.
